Tutorial #1 – Basic Photoshop Tools

Tutorial #1 - Basic Photoshop Tools

hi I'm Jordan and I'll be giving you a tutorial on the basic tools of Photoshop to start I'm going to need to get an image to work with so I've just gotten here from lo cats so I'll just copy image go back to photoshop go to file new and you'll see that the height and width were already in pixels which makes it really easy to do so I just click OK control V or command + V if you're a Mac user and barely got your picture there first I'm going to show you the Move tool three simple yeah you can move images congratulations here's an Oscar next is the marquee tool it comes in different sizes and shapes and get the elliptical tool single row the columns are there as well you literally click and select you got sine hit backspace to delete it or you can fill it with your paintbrush and not go out it's really handy for like masking getting things aligned you can also try to deselect this you click on Facebook again hold shift and see a plus comes up which means you can add more selection so still hold your Shift I'm clicking and holding the mouse button I'm selecting more things again backspace with little the ctrl + D to deselect it the lasso tools release them it makes selections but it's more freehand and again that comes in different types you've got the polygon and one which does in lovely squares I'm holding shift here that's why I look so perfect but you can do it about the deselect this is without shift you can have any shape is really linear and it has a magnetic lasso as well which kind of hooks onto things but this is a really bad image to show you but you can see how it's kind of following if I do an anchor point it's following the lines of the image so it's really handy it saves a lot of time masking stuff out next is the magic wand tool which is something which is really good to use in Photoshop you select basically it selects one of the color or something very similar to the color to each just clicked on for example if I click red book it will try and select this Martians read books possible without going into different colors or this blue binder here it will select it completely yeah also four ways get this whole bookcase like it should click holding shift and keep clicking see how it's getting more and more which is really happy yay with me up selecting would control D to deselect crop tool really good say you want to just to Facebook logo hit it press ENTER and you've got a new document just with the Facebook logo what one do that because I don't want to do it I'm not gonna go on that tool it's really confusing a Spot Healing Brush tool is pretty handy holding alt you can target the texture continue and it kind of mimics it I'll see you need to keep working over to get rid of it but isn't much better tool for that so undo that brush tool really simple use look at me I'm writing it works on colors you choose when it red band got red the brushes work make different sizes or you can affect the hardness of it lower is the more blurred the edges are next we've got the clone stamp tool this is a lot like Spot Healing tool we looked at but much better to use again if I want to get rid of wrong I'm holding all right now I'll click that's where my my textures gonna be coming from you'll see it appear see that you can't keep doing this again I'm holding alt clicking there's a target that's where it's gonna be coming from I'm covering up now of course if you go over the cat fur he'll come up so that's why I keep moving is a with the art brushes which free insane really selecting from this drop them it you can make different lovely things for this is dab wonderful Wow whole pictures gone how handy eraser tool look at it erases everything amazing about it again you can affect hardness and the size of its what like paintbrush gradient tool does much system 10 really mixing gradient the colors effect it by 2 in your palette so if I wanted red and black well that holding shift makes it rich straight you can do it any way you want it again s different ones radial loads of them literally double-sided presets you can choose on gradient editor waiting around stuff edit the blur tool pretty handy she just blows me and then see how it's getting really bad or mad living you can affect your strength so if you wanted for mild blurring Wow blurring this is a oh sorry on here you have sharpen as well as blur which means we shopping just I don't actually tell the YouTube Polly bits get sharper I'm really overdoing it just to show you whether it's like and also smudge tool look at this really handy they again that's handy for lighting what are some people on social the burn tool sorry the Dodge tool it lights ink up burn tool darken zone that's fun so really does nothing you see that huh the pen tool is really fast how you use it it there's a lot of things you can do is made for creating paths in Photoshop which I'll look in another tutorial about paths in Photoshop but what you can do I'm just going on parting it shows your work problem get rid of that say I want adjust the cat I could trace around the cat really awfully just to show you what it does oh god this is abysmal do you excuse me but yeh say I just wanted to tails I don't know just to show you guys what it does I just want the cat's tail because I'm weird person like that and I cut people's tails off for fun in pictures here you go now if we look here at the window here with layers channels and paths there's a lot of selections down here things you can do you can fill it you can stroke it she can stroke a cat's tail how fun is that or you can click selection well and you get done selection a lot like what you've done with this lasso tool earlier on flex pays you get rid of that next we've got text which is really simple to use oh wow and you can't see it of course but let me just move it up it goes on a new layer let me show you layers it goes on a complete new layer when you're doing stuff like this so that's how you use that and delete that here's just a direct selection tool usually use a path so if I created another pathway just to show you create a select the direct selection tool and it moves went to the path again I'll do a tutorial and pass I'll show you what it's all about nothing special so don't worry next here is the basically its shape tool where you can make different shapes you can have them as paths so undo you can have them as solid colors there's those different ones you can work with they're really one look at out the arrow and else we got here lines hexagons oh goodness also depending on you can change the size of that nice this is a handy tool it just kind of even leave notes around places like a I guess it's handy if you really worried yeah just leave that there and close it got a little note there from open but I don't need it though because I know it's a cat's I swore I drop at all this is a really really handy tool you can let you select comes straight off the photo so I wanted though the blue on this book picking the holding up you selected it and I can use that as a paint brush color and so on the hand tool I won't worry about too much so I'll just show you the zoom tool it literally just does what it says on the tin look at this news holding alt you can undo them out also it does the same thing here on the navigator you can just zoom in I tools at the bottom here black and white literally just gives you the two colors black and white you can switch them around with these arrows you can do with any color ah Midas tutorials been helpful because I don't think it has personally if you find any help from this old and leave feedback stuff in the comment box subscribe that'd be nice if you subscribe to me I mean it subscribe to me thanks um yeah and if you have any problems private message me comment me talk to me bye

maybe I'd have lasted longer than 5:23 if you didn't make it sound like it was a real effort for you to be bothered to make this. You might want to be less condescending also.

is there a way to move parts of the image just by like, dragging? im not really making sense but as an example say i wanted to make a cats tail long just by dragging out the end a bit. not like a free ransform but just, i dont know, a clean smudge tool?

    im not making sense sorry

Thank. You. So. Much. I've never even so much as opened photoshop before. I'm taking a Digital Media class right now and it was kicking my butt. My teacher was just like, "play around with it and figure out what everything does." Didn't really work for me. So, maybe if you had used Photoshop in the past this wasn't super helpful, but for someone like me it was just what I needed. Thanks for putting out basic content like this. People need it, and elitist a**holes can go somewhere else for what they need.

You covered all tools so quickly! But professional elements were missing.Hope you improve next time. May be you can do this again and speak clearly so that non native English speaker will understand easily.

Not for beginners — I couldn't understand a thing! I have absolutely NO idea what to do with PS other than clicking on the "open" icon. Slow down! After watching it twice, the only thing I can do is open the program. No help at all.

Gimp is free but Photoshop is more powerful. Idk I find Photoshop more useful but it is pretty expensive unless you torrent it or something.
