Northwest Profiles: Art Embracing Awareness (Oil Printing)

>>The synergy between
the photographer and the subject. A creation process that
produces photographs that take on a life of their
own, a life that harkens back to the early ages of
photography where images were the medium of the day
and experimentation with printing was commonplace. Frantisek Strouhal a
Czechoslovakian, who settled in BC’s Slocan
Valley after immigrating to Canada in 1989,
developed an interest in photography and a
seldom-used bygone process that separates tonality
from black and white while producing printed images
that are truly unique.>>In a photographic
printing process that has roots that date back
to the mid nineteenth century, Frantisek has
mastered a technique that he alone has managed to
elevate on a scale like none other. The Creation of these
images starts with a carefully photographed
subject, The 4 by 5 black and white negative is
developed, then with the help of his life partner
Chantal Robert, the negative is scanned and
layered with previously collected images as a
positive in a collage effect. The collage is then
inverted and printed onto a paper negative at the
size of the final image. In the meantime a
watercolor paper is prepared by soaking it
in an organic gelatin solution and dried. Next the paper is coated
with a spirit sensitizer, and then it’s contact
printed under UV light. After washing away the
sensitizer, the printed material, now known as the
matrix is dried and then soaked for 30 minutes
before Frantisek begins the inking process. The process is laborious,
up to 35 layers can be added, which can take
up to 3 weeks to finish inking an entire image.>>By including the beauty
of one’s surroundings and by producing images
that have a touch of photographic history in
the creation process, Frantisek hopes to
generate artwork that invites interaction
and harmony between the spiritual and physical
worlds and that engages the viewer to experience
a ray of serenity.
