NECC Academic Programs | Art

[Music] I have always known about Northern Essex as an absolutely great place to jump off into a four-year degree. I am a self-proclaimed work force dropout
and I’ve been one of those victims of way too many layoffs. My father passed away and he left me enough
money so that I could consider what I really wanted to do and I chose to come here. It was an easy choice to make, I was always artistic. I’ve been writing poetry and stories my whole life and I’m pretty good at drawing so I chose art. My parents teaching here forever I’ve always known of this school, even when I was toddler my parents would be teaching here and I remember
walking around and now I’m going to be an alumni in a few weeks it’s pretty amazing. I like taking the publication design classes on typography. They were very exciting to me doing something I really love to do you know which is designing with branding, work on a computer I felt like I was in my element working
in those classes. It’s been really validating to me to know
that I’m really good at drawing. All the different exercises that we have been instructed to
do looking at things a different way. Definitely grateful for NECC is it has really taught me to look into my artwork and try to see more than just the fabric you are using, more than
just the wood I’m using. The bigger thing is the explanation behind
it, the reason behind it, the symbolism behind it and you know, what you put into it and
what you take out of it. I’ve been interested in video and camera
for quite a while. I took that initiative and I actually took one video
class and because of that I found this internship and I just went right into it. I’m getting used to being like in a real job I feel like it is preparing me a lot and I’m so grateful for it, it gave me a solid foundation of what I want to do and I actually tested
it out and everything was perfect. I wanted to keep continuing this path with
tv production. I haven’t had a bad experience the whole entire
time I’ve been here, the teachers have gone out of their way to help me. I was actually very impressed with the professor
quality here at Northern Essex-they all want to help the students and they’re all very
well knowledged in what they do. A lot of the teachers have gone out and they
have worked in the real world. It’s better to have someone who is almost
like a boss and mentor where they are going to really show you where their experience
has come into play. I’ll be transferring to MassArt in the fall
and I’ll be majoring in industrial design. It has been a very smooth process to transfer. When I first started I didn’t have anything
more than a two year degree in mind but I’m headed toward Montserrat School of Art in
Beverly. I like the community, everyone from faculty
to students, such a supportive community. This is an opportunity to meet people who
want to learn just like you. I do feel like Northern Essex prepared me
very well. I feel like I got a top notch education here. It is a very special experience for me right
now. It’s like I’m finding out about myself all
over again and I believe it is fully set me up to take on Montserrat. [Music]
