Justin Trudeau Caught Wearing Blackface in Old Picture

Justin Trudeau Caught Wearing Blackface in Old Picture

left wing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
is a embroiled in a bit of a scandal after some pictures went public of him wearing black
face when he was in his late twenties. In one picture, Trudeau is wearing very, very
dark makeup on his entire face. And neck at an Arabian themed nights party
at the West Point Grey Academy where he was teaching at the time. There was another picture in which Trudeau
is wearing a less extreme version of the black face during a high school talent show in which
he sang a Jamaican folk song. So let’s discuss this. Conservatives obviously are just falling all
over themselves to attack the left of being hypocrites. Oh, when a right wing or wears black face,
they have to be destroyed according to the left. But when a left winger wears black face, it’s
no big deal. Now, of course, this just isn’t true. My analysis is the same on black face, no
matter who did it. I don’t care if it’s Megan Kelly defending
blackface or Justin Trudeau wearing black face or whatever the case may be. It’s not okay. Black face has a horrible racist past. You can debate, oh, it’s for comedy or whatever. And then we get into that conversation about
what can just be excused away. It being for comedic purposes, but there’s
no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It doesn’t matter who did it. Black faces not okay. The differences start to show up, not in our
analysis, but in the person who did its reaction to the black face and Justin Trudeau has immediately
apologized with no caveats, period. Not, I apologize if anybody was offended. Right? That bull. You know what it is that bs thing, I’m almost
forgot I was on a broadcast radio and TV there, that bs thing about if anyone was offended,
I apologize. Justin Trudeau saying, quote, I shouldn’t
have done that. I should have known better and I didn’t. I’m really sorry. This is what’s called a real apology. When he was asked if he thought that the photograph
was racist, he said yes it was. I didn’t consider it racist at the time, but
now we know better. So one set of very clear differences between
some l some instances of blackface and other instances of blacks face. Is the reaction from the person involved or
the person commenting? You might remember former Fox News host and
is she former NBC? Has she completely been let go from NBC or
is she just in a reduced role? Megan Kelly said on that really wacky daytime
NBC show she had for a little while. What’s the big deal with black face anyway? Sort of like reminiscing nostalgically about
the era of black face that is very different from Justin Trudeau saying this was wrong. Even if I didn’t recognize it as racist at
the time. It’s racist. No excuses. I’m sorry. So that is one major difference. Number two, I do believe that it matters when
the person can credibly say this was a mistake, black faces racist, but there’s no link whatsoever
to my policies as an elected official versus a politician who was not only caught wearing
blackface but also supports racist policies, has a history of saying racist things, whatever. So it’s not about you know the what if the
person is on the left. We treat them differently than if the person
is on the right. It’s just wrong. It’s wrong period. And there should be apologies with no caveats
whatsoever. But there is a difference between someone
who defends having worn black face and perpetuates racist policies versus someone who doesn’t
and says it was completely wrong. Now, either way, this is not good for Justin
Trudeau. There’s no question about that. He actually has sort of what I think of as
a bigger scandal. Uh, that could be an impediment to his reelection
in October’s a Canadian election, which is that he is accused of having pressured a prosecution
to be dropped, which would be really, really bad. And by the way, the timing of the black face
thing, clearly someone had this for a long time. These were not pictures that were buried in
some way and not available. Clearly the, the timing of the release has
been calculated. It doesn’t make the black face anything different
than what it is, which is wrong, not a defense of the black face, but this isn’t a yearbook
that’s been around forever. Clearly this could have come out anytime and
the timing, just literally a month ahead of the October 21st Canadian elections. We’ll see what effect it has and we will follow
a, what happens with our friendly neighbors to the north.

Complete corrupt centrist trash. Bleats about equality and constantly virtue signals and lectures people but has past sexual misconduct allegations and now this. This is why I despise the shiny elitist corporate left (Hollywood exemplifies this), they never shut up and are constantly moralising and preaching but in reality are complete hypocrites.

I am a Canadian. I cannot say I am a fan of Trudeau. But he is obviously not a racist. It is amusing though to watch Mr. SJW PM himself get caught up in a black face scandal.

We must have a sense of proportion for these things. Intentions matter! What Trudeau did is not the same thing as what was done in the 1920s.

I also don't think what Megyn Kelly said was all that bad. She was making a point that if someone wants dress up as someone they like, what is wrong with that. Which is a fair point. We are allowed to mimic the appearance of people in every other way, but not skin color? Think about that? If there were no history of racial oppression. Humans were all treated fairly and equally from day one. Would there be anything objectively wrong about altering your skin tone to mimic other people as part of a costume?

What I find absurd is how recently this became such an outrage. There are so many examples from the past 30 years where this was done in movies, SNL, etc. where everyone involved was a perfect liberal on every issue regarding race. It was tolerated because everyone understood intentions.

We have also lost the distinction between saying a racial slur vs using a racial slur. I should not be banned from saying a word in the context of talking about the fact the word exists.

But it gets worse still. There was tennis announcer that was fired once for referring to Serena Williams "Guerilla" tactics. No one believes he meant "Gorilla"! No matter, white man made wrong sound, off to the gulags.

    End of wine fueled rant.

We know today people take offence at it, but many years ago there wasn’t an issue.

So are you calling for forgiveness once one has ‘sincerely’ repented? Because if so then the precedent is set. Trudeau campaigns on a strict doctrinal platform of PC inclusivity and multiculturalism and has transgressed where as other heretics have lost jobs and reputations for their transgressions. No matter how sincere their apology, they are never forgiven, so, are some pigs more equal than others? Who decides on the veracity of the Mia culpa?

Terrible commentary. Justin Trudeau actually wore blackface. THAT was his offense. Megyn Kelly asked why wearing blackface was wrong, and when it was explained to her she apologized, retracted any and all support for the practice (as if she had ever supported it), and reiterated her commitment to fair and equal treatment for people of all races. What Trudeau did was much worse than Kelly, showed a far greater ignorance and much less sensitivity, and his apology for that misconduct was no better than Kelly's. In fact, very plausibly it is worse. And Trudeau is a public figure. Disgusting that you would lie like this, David.

If I were Justin, I would have simply said, “No that’s not me in those photos.” Because that picture was taken in 2001 and although the costume didn’t have racist intentions, Justin Trudeau is a completely different person from the man in those photos. He’s a leader who fights for equality and minority rights, and stands up for LGBTQ people as well as immigrants and refugees. He visits mosques and travels to India and wears traditional muslim and Indian clothing, and conservatives here in Canada call him a Muslim and a host of other nasty racist and bigoted comments. But even today he still stands up for women and minorities and continues to defend them like a good leader should. So no that wasn’t Justin Trudeau in those photos.

Racism is hatred. Make up is make up.

I understand the History of Blackface and what it used to mean, but if we're ever going to get beyond racism, we need to get over stuff like this. Didn't the Wayan Brother's do some movie called "White Chicks" I think it was? I'm white and that didn't offend me. I didn't find it funny and I didn't watch. but I wasn't calling for anyone's head.

Context actually matters here. It was an extremely diverse school, the faculty greenlit him in advance, no one at the event was offended because his costume was so over the top, and no one who was there that night, including people of colour, has come forward and said they were offended now. I'm not making excuse for him, I'm no fan of centrist Trudeau or his neoliberal party but I think of all his issues this is pretty small and insignificant. I'm dreading Sheer as PM, Trudeau is definitely the lesser evil.

Kelly never donned blackface and supported the idea of dressing as black people whom you like. She was ignorant but had good intentions. For this she lost her job.

Trudeau actually wore blackface multiple times despite being the wokest person in history. Now he is apologizing theatrically and so will keep his job.

What would it take to make those apologies sound less palatable? 10 pictures? A thousand? A video of him using the n word? We are just used to trump not caring and to the 'sorry if you were offended' types. Trudeaus apology is the classic move of pols caught with their pants down: insincerity.

Allowing this to become a big deal is giving into the right wing troll job they are trying to pull. I’m not all that versed in the man’s background nor policies, being an uninformed American, but I would suggest we look at his actual governing record when it comes to issues of race and diversity. Is he good there? If so, then I think that speaks far more of his character than some regrettable costume 18 years ago

I'm Canadian. I don't think the brownface or blackface Halloween thing reflect who Trudeau is now, how he governs now or what he believes now. I think he was a dumb kid who liked dressing up and goofing off, unaware how it could be hurtful to some. I honestly, truly think he didn't know that. The incident number going by by going backwards in time only proves my point. The younger he was, the more reasonable to assume he was just a dumb kid doing dumb things rather than being actively racist.

Intent also makes a HUGE difference. Dressing in brownface to mock/belittle vs dress up in brownface to complete a theme are NOT the same.

Still, looking back, he was a young man who made an error in judgement, he's apologized. And although I'm left leaning, if a conservative or Republican of the same age did this in 2001 but otherwise had no racist tenancies, I'd defend that person too. Black or brownface is a problem. Nobody should do it. But if it was done, you need to look at why it was done. Look to see if it's done to BE racist, and if the person has a track record of being racist. Trudeau doesn't fit either. It was a shit thing to do of course. I'm just saying we don't need to cancel him over this. Fellow Canadians should vote for or against him for his current leadership, not because of something that occurred two decades ago. I would feel very differently if he did brownface last Halloween, but we're again talking 2001 and earlier. Still wrong, but I don't believe it was intentionally racist, and that's why this is a non-scandal to me.

Why do things always get judged on the worst possible interpretation. I think there is one thing that is never considered here. It's 20 years ago. While black face or similar actions weren't ok then, the PERCEPTION back then was they are. The perception has greatly changed since and thats a good thing. If you look back at an event like that and try to judge a person by it, you have to look at the person today and see if they have evolved as a person along the same lines as we evolved as a society. ANd in case of Justin Trudeau i think he very much did and his mistake is honest.

Edit: Actually, maybe. He's not all that left-wing.

This picture must have been discovered by the Trudeau-team as well a long time ago. I don't understand why these campaign strategists decide not to be proactive on this and be the ones to publish it themselves. Would have certainly had a different effect on Justin's image

"We know better now." I hope he was referring to just the people at that party because I don't recall blackface being close to acceptable post the 80s.

Can somebody explain this to me please, I don't mean this rhetorically, I would really appreciate to learn:

Why is putting on black make-up racist? Notice I say black make-up and not black-face. I understand the concept of black-face was really racist, but is anyone who wears black make-up immediately being as bad as the black-faces of the past? Is that it? I would say wearing the black make-up is racially insensitive and also usually it comes with behaviour and movements that are furthering racial stereotypes.

But actual racism involves, according to it's definition, some believe of superiority or inferiority of races, or it would involve antagonism or discrimination towards a certain race. I just don't see that happening here, judging only from the wearing of the make-up itself.

Can somebody explain? Please refer to actual definitions of racism.

The orders of the privy council are normally not known to Canadians. Since confederation, and used by all parties, the council does and has guided ministers on questions of intent and law since the government makes the laws. We don't know what other PMs councils have done, but the intent in government the council is where politics and law are discussed with the clerk. Non of the parties dare to eliminate the council because, secretly they too have made full use of it's purpose since 1867.

It's the equivalent (but secret) discussion at a minister level- eg do we prosecute this 90 yr old woman to jail because she refused to fill out the census. The council replies no, the federal law's intent is general compliance and nothing is served in this old ladies case. She is not prosecuted, by discussion of the minister, even though the law would put her in jail and the exception, by the council, is not public information. The intent is not to subvert the law, but guide, in some cases of the overall 'justice' in implementing the law when raised from time to time. It's also possible the law as written, was not clear or not well thought out. Nothing unusual, from a government process, is going on here. Orders of council are certainly not 'illegal' in any Commonwealth country.

🌺David. You don’t get to decide what ethnic people find offensive. You aren’t black or Asian. You can’t dictate to people, how they should feel when you aren’t the one the offence is directed at. Plus he did it THREE times. The “peoplekind” President did it 3 times. Proving he is s hypocrite and has more in common with the people he claims to dislike 😂. I wonder what else is in his closet? 🌺

Why am I not getting why this is such a big deal? Make-up for mockery is ofc just that, but in the America's,,, I just don't see the supposed malice behind Trudeau's dressing, even though he's a rather revolting no matter how he dresses (because as a person/politician, he's a quite shitty dude)

Black face In the rest of the world it is not seen as an offensive thing, because intrinsically it is not. In Europe people use it today in customs quite frequently, as well as in the Opera (Otello e.g). In Japan is widely used as well.

Nobody cares really, nobody feels offended because it doesn't have an offensive spirit, it is usually part of a celebration. It is done to impersonate a character that happens to be black, it has nothing to do with all the other people that have that skin color; that is mainly part of the American racial paranoia and racism, to believe blacks are a race, something different and don't have personalities. They are black first, individuals after. I its so disgustingly racist that is uncanny.

Blacks are not even a race, they are mixed with an average of 30% European admixture, nevertheless for Americans one drop of blood makes you impure, either brown or black. In other places being mixed recognizes the bridge between 2 worlds, in America there is an idea of racial purity.

It would be as ridiculous as if people used blond wigs to impersonate Trump and by extension turn it into a mockery of all blonds. Nigerians don't feel less than Europeans, neither Jamaicans, which are 2 distinctive countries, not blacks (you cannot homogenize people because of skin color, that it seen as offensive by most of the world).

America empowers this outrage culture to sell news an for political gain, but you give people a narrative that makes them feel intrinsically and inextricably different, which make them seek even more grievances. Perhaps in America had a mockery connotation, but that is not even close to be a universal thing.

Except no one anywhere would care if the Far Left hadn't had their knickers in a twist for the past 4 years about this crap. I don't care. No one should care. This shouldn't even be a thing. But when the alt-left starts getting pelted with the same slings and arrows they threw at moderates they cry foul? Come on.

It's funny but in belgium and the netherlands it's a tradition. No racism intended. I grew up with it and it hasn't made me a racist. It creates a rather positive connotation because they gave us candy. (Btw this is still a tradition today)

I'm not Canadian, but If I was I wouldn't give a damn about his apology. He's only sorry he got caught. This is how they think of black people in private, that we are Caricatures to be mocked and imitated for laughs. I'm never surprised when things like this surface.

I don't care who did blackface in the past. Didn't we have slave-owning presidents who are still on the money? The past was different than now, our standards have changed, or realizations have become stronger. Can we move on now? Isn't the world about to be destroyed by global warming?

Justin Trudeau should have his citizenship stripped and he should be pushed out on an ice flow with just a loin cloth and a knife so that he may spare his honor by disemboweling himself before he freezes to death. What a pock mark on the great Canada, may we never forget, uh, what did he do again?
