Hiding $50,000 in our DIY *Secret Compartment* Art Ledge

Hiding $50,000 in our DIY *Secret Compartment* Art Ledge

(somber music) Do you have so much money and no good hiding
places for it? Do you not trust your cat? Who would probably take
the cash and leave you? There’s gotta be a better way. (beeping) Hey guys, we’re
Evan and Katelyn. And today we’re
making an art ledge with hidden storage. To hide the 500
individual fake bills that we just spent 50
dollars on for an intro skit. But honestly we’ve been
wanting to make a art ledge for a long time because
as you might have noticed on this channel,
we love making art. And continuing to add holes
into our wall is unsustainable because we don’t have an
exact match for the paint. (both laughing) Yeah, that’s true. Yeah, so we’re just gonna
make a couple holes in a wall for an art ledge, but then
you can just place it. You can re-arrange it,
and add more super easily. And we want to add
storage because… It’s cool (laughs). It seems cool (laughs). And there are practical reasons. I mean maybe that’s where
spare house keys go, or our passports, or like that’s where we can keep…
A little grab bag. It is a little small
for a grab bag. I could hide the gummies
that I’ve been letting get to the perfect staleness
level for a year because they’re finally
almost reaching the right chewiness level.
This is a legit thing. She has like three that she’s
been working on for a while. And, we do have to hide them because your dad likes them too. Yeah, exactly. And with the holidays
coming and guests coming, we want to spruce up
the house a little bit. So, we thought a house
project would be nice. Yeah, so first up. Head to Lowe’s for supplies. KATELYN: Lowe’s is our sponsor. EVAN: Yeah, yeah. KATELYN: So most art ledges,
if you look at it them from the side, the
profile’s kinda like this. But cause we’re adding storage, our supplies requirements
are a little different. First off, we need
a bunch more wood. We’re gonna build
ours out of oak, and luckily Lowe’s has it in
all different shapes and sizes. We also need some hidden hinges that you can’t see
from the outside. And while we were there we
actually picked up some cute art and a little plant that
I hope I can keep alive to put on the shelf later. But now I guess I should
hand it over to Evan to show you the 3D model and how this is all
gonna go together. EVAN: Since our shelf is
gonna be a little bit heavier, and we’ll need to
pull on this front lip in order to access
the hidden storage, we’re gonna go ahead and upgrade the wall
mounting solution to this bracket right here
which we’ll screw to the wall and to the shelf itself. But before any of that, we need to cut some wood. KATELYN: We’re gonna
cut all of these at once since they all have
to be the same length. Yep. (saw grinding) (peaceful classical music) When I was planning on
how to add a hinge to this I thought, what’s the
fanciest thing that I can add? Look at this. We got soft-close? Soft-close hinges. The most premium
of hidden storages. (Evan laughs) It’s kinda hard to open. Is that gonna be an issue
when it’s attached to the wall and we’re like, (straining) (Evan laughs) Can that be adjusted? No. (laughs) But I think that when
you have a lever, you know this is
gonna be a lever, so it’ll help you do it. And we’re gonna very firmly
attach it to the wall cause we’re gonna be
mounting it to three studs and also to be extra fancy, I got this jig right
here, that’ll let me know how far to drill,
how far off it is. I just gotta plug this in, and I go because I’m
lazy and smart like that. Yeah. I mean no. I mean you’re smart
Are you still? (Evan laughs) Are you still worried
about the hinges? Well I’m equal parts excited about the soft close because
that’s my definition of luxury but, I’m also
kinda worried about the force to snap them open. The only way we’ll
know, is to add it, and then test it out. The only way we’ll know is to completely
finish the project. Mounted the wall (laughs)
And hope… Yeah, and hope that it’s okay. (peaceful classical music) We’ve never installed
this type of hinge before but that was surprisingly easy with a jig, which is
cheating, but still. Docking procedure initiated. Latch one. Latch two. Initiate operation soft-close. (gong rings) KATELYN: Ooh. (Evan laughs) That worked pretty well. KATELYN: So this
will be the front. EVAN: I think I might
be able to lower this KATELYN: Yeah, it looks a
little high on the side. EVAN: That lowers it. Hmm. (playful classical music) Man. So it says between three
and six millimeters, I should’ve gone four or five. So I could have adjusted
it a little bit more. Oh, so we should’ve tested
out this new technique on some scrap wood. Or we can re-drill the holes. Farther in, using the jig? No that won’t work. What do you mean farther in? Even if you go farther there’s
gonna be an extra hole. You know? That only works if
we do it farther in or farther out. Oh, we could reposition them. Yeah. And then when it’s
left with these like… Fancy… Receptacles…
Weight reducers Some weight reducers. Yeah. (Evan crying) (cheerful game show music) Okay. So, if we were just doing
this project for ourselves, and we didn’t have to
post after-shots of it on the internet, we’d probably would just
drill new holes in this piece and call it good and just have hidden
holes on the inside of our cabinet. But I feel an obligation
to make this free of large mistake holes. Dun dun dun dun So we did it again. Now the question is, does
our new one actually work? (wood clatters) EVAN: You ready? (suspenseful upbeat music) (Evan screams) KATELYN: Oh my gosh. Oh. Oh, and it’s flush too. Yeah. Wow. It’s better in every way. Yeah. KATELYN: It’s good. We got rid of it.
Whoa. This is something
that I learned. There has to be a
slight gap right here, can you show them? Right there? Because that’s
where the hinge is. So what I did is I chose the
exact right part of the wood kind of bending this way…
KATELYN: Oh, on purpose. The whole way. So there’s gonna
be a tiny gap here, but the edges are flush. KATELYN: And now
it looks so good. It looks so much better. It was a little derpy before. Yeah. And to help
visualize the rest of it, we have these pieces right here, that we can just put into place. Yeah kinda like that. Imagine a wall there
and the end cut off. That looks good. EVAN: Well, it’s really good. KATELYN: I don’t
think you could tell that it’s got a hinge. That it opens, you know? EVAN: Oh. KATELYN: Oh that’s
great, I love it. That’s great. Yeah, I’m so glad we re-did it. KATELYN: Me too. EVAN: (laughs) Sorry,
we’re recording. (Evan laughs) So now that we’ve gotten our
failure out of the way early in this video, we’re gonna
move onto the next step, which is building the box for our little hidden
storage shelf cabinet. Basically, cutting wood
and gluing it together. EVAN: Like most
wood-working projects. (fast-paced techno music)
(saw buzzing) Is it flush? (saw buzzing) (wood slamming down) Oh wait, we should do glue. What? We (laughs) should
put glue on it. (both laughing) You mean we’re not just
getting this cool shot where we do quick cuts and then it’s done? (Evan laughs) (fast-paced techno music) (Evan laughs) What? Just laughing that we didn’t
do glue the first time. No one has to know,
I’m gonna cut that out. No you’re not. I know you’re not. (hammering) (Evan laughs) That was like all you. KATELYN: I like it, okay. I think it’s a
good place to end. (peaceful classical music) (Evan gasps) Did you just spill? (Evan laughs) No, I almost (laughs) spilled
all over myself though. (Evan coughing and laughing) I’m just gonna be
very casual about it. (Katelyn laughing) (Evan laughing) All right. (both laughing) (Katelyn snorts) (beeping) The glue-up is done, and
now we just need to see if the front piece still fits now that it has this
top attached to it. I mean, it should. Oh, nice. It looks good on this side. How’s it look over here? (Evan clearing throat)
EVAN: Looks good. It doesn’t… KATELYN: Oh there’s
a little bit.. EVAN: Almost needs to
close a little bit more. KATELYN: A little bit more,
then we might have to adjust. So some of y’all might notice, that since that front lip where the art is
gonna rest against can open up the art might
just slip right off. Not a good design
for an art ledge. But we’re gonna add a little, we’re gonna cut
this into strips. And add it along the front and it’s the perfect height. KATELYN: So when it opens, you’ll still have a little lip. (uptempo jazz music) I think we’re good. Yay.
Onto the next glue-up! Okay next up, we
need to make the part that mounts to the wall
that’ll hold this up. (saw buzzing) You wanna come
around and see it? It’ll fit. (hammer pounding) Yeah! (laughs) EVAN: Yay! NARRATOR: Three hours later. (uptempo jazz music) (saw buzzing) We interrupt this
regularly scheduled montage to bring you what is hopefully the very last problem remaining. This looks nice, but this gap still bothers me. (quiet playful music) It still bothers me too. Significantly. I kinda didn’t want
to say anything, but it does still bother me. Magnets. Magnets. You’re not gonna explain? You’re just gonna
say, magnets people! No, no. Hear me out.
Magnets! So, we just need to be
able to hold it closed a little bit, because
when we do that, if we have one pair
of magnets there, and one pair of
magnets right there, We’re not gonna do
one right there? No, I don’t think
so, doesn’t need it. Okay. Let’s do as little
work as possible. While fixing the
mistake that we have. Yeah. (Evan laughs) (uptempo jazz music) (drill buzzing) KATELYN: Whoa. Okay, so I think
that that looks good. That looks good. (drill buzzing) This is pretty beefy. Yeah. I was like, this is substantial. Wait, back up a little bit. I was like, (tapping wood)
(laughs) Oh, that’s nice. (drill buzzing) Actually, I think
we should pause, no, don’t open it yet. The test needs to be when
all the art is on there. Oh. Because that’s like
the realistic test. Oh, but I want to do it! The test is when all
of the art is on there, so that we can make sure that we can open it without
everything shaking off. Okay. Now the moment we’ve
all been waiting for. Can we open these hinges
without knocking everything off? Oh, yeah. No problem. (both laughing) (Evan clapping) Oh, that’s good. Okay. You wanna do it? Yeah. Sorry, I took that
moment from you. Everything felt very stable. Super stable. I was not worried
about anything falling. Yeah, and the soft-close…
Yeah, it’s fancy. Beautiful. Okay, but can it fit… All of our moneys? And…
(laughs) You’re like Gollum. I’m pretty proud of our work. (Evan laughs) This is the first time
we’ve done anything with a hidden compartment. I know! I think it was pretty cool! I don’t think that I would
expect this to open up if I was just walking
by and I didn’t notice. Now, of course, you guys know
where we stash our things. So don’t come for us. And nobody else knows. Thanks again to Lowe’s for
sponsoring this project and making it possible. If you guys are having guests
over this holiday season you can head to Lowe’s…

over this holiday season you can go to Lowe’s and
get everything you need to get your house ready, and all the links to all
the tools and materials we used for this
project, down below. See you next time! BOTH: Bye! (beeping) (peaceful music) Yeah, so we heard a cat. We gon’ get a cat. I used to work at this place that made custom furniture for the White House and other gov buildings in DC that had INSANE hidden compartments. It was like a Chris Ramsey video, you opened the compartments through a series of puzzles. Springs, levers, fake screws that were buttons, pound here, slide a credit card here, BOOM, little box opens out of an end table. Always wanted something like that in my house!

I had to share this with a friend of mine who keeps Peeps and gummies until they are rock hard because "otherwise they're gross." Must be a texture thing. Enjoy your sugar stashing place. Nice piece! (and cute song at the end)

What's the big square picture in the background? Is it from a project, or is it 'just' bought? Looks cool.
