Best Mavic Pro Camera Settings for Photography

Best Mavic Pro Camera Settings for Photography

this weekend I’m going to San Diego I’m
actually living in one hour I need to get home and pack – it’s a little tight! I have decided not to
bring this for photography so I will do some photography with this and we’ll
talk about I need to figure out how to put all this in this I’m in San Diego now! so it’s very sunny out which is okay
because I just put an ND filter 32 I’m going to take this out and take some
pictures of the beach from above let’s see how it goes! we are in La Jolla, it’s very gloomy a little
windy as well it’s super busy so I will take the drone
up and try to take pictures of that Pier from the sky I also saw some
seals in the water we’ll try to take some portraits of seals! so I’m back from San Diego I was able to
take some pictures with my MAVIC and now I will tell you which camera settings I
used okay let’s go into the camera settings in the camera settings I prefer
to use manual mode as I want to keep control on the ISO as a matter of fact I
want to keep the lowest ISO possible which will be 100 at the same
time I will need to adjust the shutter speed and I can do so by using this
wheel on the top right corner just behind the antenna and I will adjust
until I have all the main information of my image in the middle of my histogram I
don’t want the histogram to clip either on the left or on the right I want
to have as much information possible right in the middle in the second menu
as photo I use a single shot as image size I use the 4:3 ratio because
basically it’s a bigger image and I can always decide to crop it later as image
format I use raw because raw will give me the highest and widest dynamic range
and give me a lot more flexibility to adjust my image and post using raw I
don’t have to worry about the white balance because I can change it later in
LIGHTROOM, as style I use the same settings that I use on my video so it
would be minus 1 for sharpness minus 1 for contrast and 0 for saturation I know
this is controversial some people prefer to a +1 in sharpness that’s not me I
prefer to have less work to do in post-production, minus 1 is what works
for me and s color profile i use D-Cinelike just like in the video settings in
the third and last menu there are three things that i want to have on at all
time when i take pictures with the Mavic and those are the histogram the
grid and the center-point make sure those are on it will make your
life easier and that’s all so simple settings the
hard part is always in photography is to find your composition aerial photography
is very fascinating the opportunity to have such a unique point of view comes
with the challenge of having our eyes so far from the camera so searching for the
right composition might be a little more difficult
my require a little more patience but the results can be very rewarding now a
very important part in any photography workflow is to develop your images in
post especially when you shoot in RAW I know there is a lot of people that wants
to sell you Lightroom presets to get your images Instagram ready in one click
well in my experience there is no preset there is no filter there is no magic
there works in one click so before buying any preset I think it might be a
good idea to learn how to adjust your images by yourself so let me know if you
are interested in knowing more about this I hope you found some good
information in this video let me know your thoughts leave me a comment don’t
leave me alone thanks for watching and see you next week

Good video again! What LUT have you used for the video parts? It would be good if you do a tutorial on how to edit the Mavic photos as they always look quite 'pale' in my opinion!

    Hi Attilo,
I've only just found your channel, great video I'm now going to watch more of your work.
I would love to see your workflow in lightroom on how you edit without buying filters & presets,
    Keep them coming,

As an advocate of large sensors and new to UAV aerial photography (having used my airplane and medium format film and full-frame DSLRs for 15 years in this regard), I must admit that I've had (highly surprisingly) spectacular results with photostitch panoramics (Lightroom Photomerge Panorama utility) using the Mavic camera in Portrait mode (vertical), overlapping by about 1/3 (utilizing the grid markings). The proof is in the printing, having enlarged the below referenced image to 19"x49" (printed area; Epson 9900)… so far. I plan to try 36" wide roll paper in the near future. The image resolution is quite acceptable—and I'm quite fixated on resoultion. This is in addition to the fact that the dynamic foreground (surf) of the referenced image was somehow ("automagically") merged into a scene that is visually successful. This is how I've managed to get the most out of the Mavic's tiny sensor and lens. In case the following link doesn't work, it's frame 0984, "Offshore Montana de Oro State Park" in the SLO County Gallery: https://deancully.com/S-L-O–County/Coast/1/caption .

Thank you for the video, some really amazing shots. It's frustrating you can't fly the drone over the beaches or Presdio here in SF (I see you are in Bay Area too).

I've not experimented much with still photography from the Mavic but this video has inspired me to get RAW mode turned on and get out there and take some aerial stills!

One comment, and I know I'll sound like the drone police, but your shot flying over the beach seemed very low given the density of people underneath. As an experienced drone pilot myself, I'd be a little worried if I saw a drone fly over me on the beach at that altitude.

Great information, thank you. I have learned about video mostly since I got into drones. It's now time to learn photography with it. Do you use nd filters with pictures? they probably aren't as necessary like with video are they. Except uv filters or polorizers.

Really appreciate your doing this and hope you will do more still imagery tutorials (along with the videography ones). Your tips on settings are very helpful. Editing tutorials would be great. I thought California didn't allow drone flying on beaches?  And I would think San Diego would have many no fly zones due to the Navy base there.  Was that a challenge there?

Have you changed your settings due to the new firmware that came out recently?

    Your photos are great.

Max

I am not sure if dji fixed it, but if you set sharpness to anything below +1 it will force noise reduction in dark/ shadowed areas and smooth it out completely.

I recently got a Phantom 3, I also really like taking pictures. I'm not so new to flying one but, taking pictures with one is new. I've taken it up a few times in Beginner mode and taken afew test videos to get used to the prospective. I'm interested in taking the pictures higher and I'm interested in how far some of the higher photos can get you? I really enjoyed your presence in this video, I will be watching more. Presence is one of the things I lack most in my videos. I hope to do more Interview style videos. I'm interested in your microphone use, brand and style? What camera do you use in interview settings? Do you have any videos that go over your gear more? I really enjoyed watching you pack your bag, did you gather all the things, pack and then repack? I can never seem to find everything I want to bring until the last minute.
