I beg to differ… although the video resolution could have been better and some key parts clarified, this IS a tutorial ! I had to slow the video down during some parts to understand what was being done, it was educational. My thanks to David for his effort

This is just showing the process of the painting. There's no instruction here or even audio. The title made it seem like it's a tutorial but it's really not.

I agree I wish there was audio cause I had to really look to see how they placed the patterns on there. I don't think I would ever use this technique but you never know. I do think these patterns are not playing to look at at all. But I get it and it's great to learn something new. I do wish imaginefx did do me audio especially for these long videos it would really help.

Well,as a professional digital artist you should know how it works don´t you?
    Free YouTube video=no sound
    Expensive ImagineFX video=real teaching.
    Can´t blame them, it´s business.

The work is brilliant but the presentation is SUCK! No sound, we got nothing. You can do it with yourself. Don't share it ok? Cuz no one can perceive it but you.

I am glad some of these don't have audio personally. A lot of tutorials the artist feels like they have to have a running commentary in order to please people and because the ego or left brain loves explanation. Always questions like "what brushes do you use?" Watch and adjust to fit your own style. People "expect" audio and then think something isn't as good without it. The best way to learn is thru demo, not just looking at a painting, but just watching someone work…quietly. thanks!

These videos correspond to issues of ImagineFX magazine which typically DO describe the process and insights of the artists. These videos are mere accompaniments to what gets taught in the corresponding magazine.

I work professionally in the industry too. Every one has a learning style. If you learn from observation, then good for you. The majority of people I know though prefer a deeper understanding of the principles before they can go ahead and start breaking the rules. Sure, I can learn something from just studying a James Gurney painting but I can learn a lot more if he explains his color choices, directional forces, where he wants the eye to go etc.

Untrue (professional artist speaking) – observing the process of painting itself, with no instructions, can still teach something. Visual arts are all about observation – learn to observe, and you'll always learn something.

The first half of this video could've been cut out completely, and without audio it is too boring to watch, and much less useful.

IFX seldom put audio in the tutorials because if you buy the magazine, the step by step is there. The CD is a complimentary kind of thing that goes in tandem with the written tutorials (It's like you can see the actual work process if you can't understand the pictures). It's pretty redundant if the artist explains stuff in the CD that's written in the issue. Sad thing is, like you said, it is a bit useless if we don't buy the mag or have a PDF file. 🙁

Everyone has a learning style. And I respect the one you seem to be leaning towards. As for me, especially with art, I like to know how the artist solves problems like perspective, color choices, mood etc. If you browse tutorials with audio done by the very best in our industry, you begin to realize everyone has unique approaches to solving problems in art. My art in the past year has improved just from listening to guys like feng zhu than all my college semesters put together.

I disagree, I would not say it isn't learning, but I wouldn't say that the artist is teaching either.
For example, if I saw someone jump into a pit of fire, and they burned themselves, I would learn that fire pits can burn you; I did not need any audio or anyone telling me.

But for the sake of videos, audio does help (it's boring with it).

if there would be an audio or commentary teaching us the process techniques while doing the illustration then it would be really awesome, it would be a big help for people who can't afford to go to an art school but can afford to buy a tutorial.

Because with an audio track, the artist can communicate with clarity what techniques are being used, why they were chosen and what tools were preferred. Without audio you end up watching a silent and very boring film presentation. If one goes to school to learn something and the teacher doesn't speak, knowledge is not transferred. Sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

I like it! It's really useful. The best thing anybody cand o It's just taking few minutes, looking for the things that I thought they could be more useful. I think this tutorial is useful the way it is. audio is not necessary If you see it with attention.

I thought NO AUDIO is just on YT, but then I bought a product…and most of them have no audio!
It's just watching someone paint and sketch…there is no added value in it, It doesn't teach!. It's awesome, but…that's it.
FengZhu can teach you more in his 20 minut free vid than this in 3 hour.
And who spend 3 hours watching vid with no audio it's just simply boring.

This us amazing, I would really like to know what you do after you have cloned the texture/pattern on its layer in your drawing so that it allows your shading through the layer. I have limited photoshop understanding and see that you have made the layer multi and have set the opacity to about 82% but what else do you do, what was the lasso tool used for ect. Please help. You are an amazing artist and its mystical to watch you work, I would just like to attempt to understand what you do.
    Thanks

How the heck will you know what the artist is thinking and what influences their creative decisions during the production process if they do a tutorial with no audio? It's not learning if you're just watching and someone doesn't give a reason why they used a particular technique and not the other.
